Egypt signed a partnership agreement with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency on Wednesday to implement a project aimed at improving access to information for people with disabilities through DAISY multimedia publications.
DAISY, or Digital Accessible Information System, is a global standard for digital talking publications for individuals with print disabilities.
The partnership was signed by 10 Egyptian entities, including the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, the National Council for People with Disability, and the National Library and Archive of Egypt.
Until 2018, DAISY did not support the Arabic language, until Shinano Kenshi, a Japanese hardware product manufacturer, carried out the inclusion project in Egypt.
The inclusion was carried out between 2018 and 2021.
The project was initiated in line with the declaration of 2018 as the Year of Persons with Disabilities, the newly updated Egyptian law for the rights of persons with disabilities, and the general strategy of MCIT to empower persons with disabilities.
