Cairo court places Muslim Brotherhood, number of its leading figures on terrorism list

In three separate rulings, a Cairo criminal court put the Muslim Brotherhood and a number of notable members of the group on the state’s terror list for a five-year period, Egypt’s official gazette revealed on Monday.

In the first ruling, the court placed the pro-Brotherhood TV figures Mohamed Nasser, Moataz Matar and Hamza Zawba along with 14 other leading figures in the group on the terror list.

Nasser, Matar and Zawba had been been tried in absentia over the past few years.

For several years, the three resided in Turkey where they worked for Brotherhood-affiliated TV channels in Turkey.

In March 2021, the Turkish government asked those TV channels to stop airing programmes critical of Egypt and its government in a move to turn over a new page with Cairo.

In April 2022, those TV channels announced that they were leaving Turkey.

Nasser and Matar now live in London and continue to work for Brotherhood-affiliated TV channels.

In another separate court ruling, the court placed leading Brotherhood figures Yahia Moussa and Abdel-Fattah Zaraa as well as 11 others on the terror list.

In the third ruling also, the court placed 10 defendants in Case 1224/2021, which is being investigated by the High State Security Prosecution, on the state’s terror list.

Under the anti-terrorism law, which has been in effect since 2015, a person on the terror list is banned from travel and is liable to have their assets frozen.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been designated by Egypt as a terrorist organisation since December 2013.
